The lead serial is Norman Bean's "Under the Moons of Mars," beginning its first installment with the mysterious narrative of Captain John Carter. A Civil War veteran discovered dead with outstretched arms toward the sky, Carter has left behind an account of his transformation into an extraordinarily preserved man who has "died twice and am still alive." His story begins in the Arizona mountains of 1865-1866, where he and a fellow officer locate a gold-bearing quartz vein; while his partner departs for supplies, Carter remains alone at their claim. Other serialized works include William Wallace Cook's "The Hand of Hate," a story of public and private law conflicting violently; the continuation of C. Maclean Savage's "Prince Imbecile," a Japanese romance featuring knighthood; Edwin Baird's "Real Stuff" about a Chicago youth pursuing acting; Alexander Teixeira de Mattos's "The Bolting Baroness," involving Venetian intrigue; and Isabel Ostrander's "The One Who Knew." Charles Stephens contributes the complete novel "Manikins of Malice."
