Upon exploration, they discover rapidly growing vegetation and eventually encounter the Selenites—intelligent lunar inhabitants who capture them. After escape and conflict with "Moon Butchers" (hostile Selenites), Bedford reaches the sphere's upper regions. The conclusion depicts Bedford alone on the moon's surface, searching for his companion while navigating the harsh environment of extreme heat and thin atmosphere.
