The Argosy
The Argosy, Volume 39 (January-June 1885) This issue of *The Argosy*, edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, contains the serial mystery "The Mystery of Allan Grale," illustrated by M. Ellen Edwards. The narrative follows young tourists George Vivian and Allan Grale as they become lost in a Scottish Highland mountain pass near Loch Maree. Exhausted and stranded at nightfall, they must wade a treacherous river to reach a farmhouse. The mystery deepens as the editors hint at secrets: Allan mentions a locked box he fears discovery of, while George alludes to papers he hopes his friend Maria will find first. The serial unfolds across twenty-three chapters with titles suggesting suspense and concealment—"The Knock at the Door," "Beware!," "Locked in." The issue also includes "Johnny Ludlow's Papers: Caramel Cottage" (three installments), a geographical essay "Among the Welsh" by Charles W.
