The Argosy
This volume of *The Argosy* (July–December 1894), edited by Charles W. Wood, contains the serial novel *The Grey Monk* by T. W. Speight, running from chapters XXVI through LI. The novel concerns Luigi Rispani, posing as Lewis Clare, grandson of Sir Gilbert, now residing at Withington Chase, while Giovanna (supposedly his mother) is installed at nearby Maylings house. Recent chapters detail Giovanna's musical instruction, social reception among the local gentry, and her reliance on companion Mrs. Tew—a widow of a minor canon—to navigate English society conventions. Beyond the serial, the volume features numerous short stories and sketches by writers including Ellen Thorneycroft Fowler, E. Nesbit, and others, alongside a travel column "Letters from South Africa" by the editor. Substantial poetry contributions appear throughout, representing contemporary Victorian verse. Illustrations accompany major installments.
