Museum Catalog Note This issue of the Beadle and Adams weekly (No. 1069, January 1897) contains the opening serial "On Land and Sea; Or, The Perils of a Kidnapped Boy" by Bracebridge Hemyng. The narrative begins in Naples with wealthy, pleasure-seeking Count Carlo di Capri's jealous pursuit of the engaged American heiress Mamie Winthrop. After her rejection and his defeat in gambling to her fiancé, Captain Charles Vernon, di Capri vows revenge. The story advances ten years to New York, where the Vernons' young son is abducted from Central Park by a man throwing powder in the nurse's eyes. Parallel scenes introduce a boy named Paulo living in squalor on Crosby Street with an organ-grinder named Giacomo, and a cruel man named Carlo operating a fruit stand with a ten-year-old assistant—connecting threads suggesting the kidnapped child's subsequent fate and di Capri's executed revenge scheme.
