"The Masked Men of Death Canyon" by Col. Arthur F. Holt is a Western serial featured in this 1885 Beadle and Adams pulp issue. Chapter I introduces banker Charles Castleton and his daughter Cora traveling through Death Canyon by stage when road-agent "Lightning Dick" halts them. Rather than robbing Castleton, the masked bandit privately warns him against settling in Bullion City, claiming it harbors dangerous criminals and that Lightning Dick considers himself Castleton's protector. Castleton refuses the advice. Chapter II shifts to Bullion City itself, a rough mining camp of two hundred inhabitants plagued by gambling dens, thieves, and Lightning Dick's robberies. The narrative follows patrons at the "Gambler's Paradise" saloon where gambling is rampant. A tall, bearded stranger in incongruous formal wear—described as a curious character—enters and addresses the monte-dealer.
