Powell's Pard. This issue features the first installment of a story by Major H. B. Stoddard about Frank Powell, called "White Beaver" by the Winnebago Indians where he serves as Medicine Chief. Powell, a handsome, well-armed man of twenty-five with long black hair, is riding westward after avenging wrongs done him. He encounters a lynch mob about to hang a one-armed giant called "One-Armed Oll" for allegedly stealing gold. Powell, recognized by the mob's leader as a doctor who once saved his life, intervenes violently—shooting the rope with a pistol bullet to free the victim and engaging the twenty-man gang in armed standoff. The narrative emphasizes Powell's physical prowess, marksmanship, and moral courage as he and his allies fortify their position behind wagons, pinning down the frustrated mob.
