This issue of *Beadle and Adams' Weekly* (Vol. XXX, No. 98, August 11, 1891) features "Toltec Tom, the Mad Prospector; or, Unearthing the Cavern League," a serial by Lieutenant A. K. Sims. The opening chapters introduce a horseman who, while searching the Colorado River region near Loco Island in Arizona, accidentally falls into the river and takes refuge on the island, which he discovers is covered only with toxic loco plants. Meanwhile, beneath the island, a smuggling operation of Chinese coolies is hidden in a large cavern system. The cavern serves as headquarters for a criminal band led by Captain Basil Flint and his lieutenant Paou. When Flint observes the mysterious horseman searching the island, he suspects he may be a government spy and considers shooting him, particularly suspicious because smoke from their fire may have drawn the stranger's attention.
