Before he can force himself upon her, a boy calling himself "Little Clean Grit"—a young but quick-drawing gunslinger of educated speech—intervenes with drawn revolver, driving Hanshaw away. The boy, newly arrived in camp, volunteers to help Helen uncover the truth about her father and investigate Hanshaw's apparent villainy. Clean Grit pursues the doctor, hoping to extract information.
