This Beadle and Adams dime novel, *The French Spy; or, The Fall of Montreal* by W. J. Hamilton, presents a historical adventure set during the French and Indian War period. The narrative opens with a dramatic street rescue in Montreal: Despard, an English spy living covertly among the French, intercepts three men abducting the gentlewoman Marie D'Arigny and carries her to safety at a musketeer guard post. Marie reveals she was seized without explanation. The story unfolds through exposition that Marie's brother was murdered by the villain Mariot, a crime known to only a select group including Despard, Captain Lamont, and the American escapee Wilton (called "the Silent Slayer").
