This issue contains the opening of a serialized western adventure novel, "The White Outlaw: The Branded Brigand" by Harry Hazard, published by Beadle and Adams in 1870. The narrative introduces a mining camp in northern California's Fall River region, where protagonist Donald Mylne, a Scotsman-by-birth American miner with a dissolute past, leads a group of six prospectors: the portly Dutchman Jan Weber, the mysterious Enoch Mozey, Connecticut Yankee Timothy Jenkins, the youthful Willie Herbert, and the Irish miner Dan Tipberghien, with Chinese cook Soo Chin. After supper, Jenkins discovers his gold dust—roughly ninety ounces, worth two thousand dollars—has been stolen from the camp. The theft creates immediate suspicion among the close-knit group. The issue also advertises the broader "Dime Speakers" and "Dime Dialogues" series of performance collections for theatrical recitations, declamations, and comedies.
