The narrative then shifts to an incoming stagecoach carrying passengers bound for Bunco, including the notable Miss Kinie Vandeleur, accompanied by a gray-haired gentleman, and Professor Elderberry—a young man in spectacles competing for her attention against other miners like Plumb Center Pete. The excerpt cuts off as various travelers exhibit interest in the young woman.
