Carleton and old scout Judd Baker witness the beast, which withstands rifle fire; Judd's horse bolts. A mysterious roar interrupts: a flash flood rushes down the canyon. The narrative shifts to reveal Captain Gunnison leading a wagon train of pioneers, accompanied by Jules St. Auburn, a refined young man of ambiguous character. A widow, Mrs. Armberleigh, has joined the party, drawing St. Auburn's sympathetic but oddly insincere interest. The train travels through dangerous canyon terrain.
