*Thayendanegea; Or, The Scourge: The War-Eagle of the Mohawks* By Ned Buntline (serialized, Chapter II) This romance concerns Thayendanegea, an Indian youth of fifteen or sixteen, who demands his mother reveal his birth name and his father's identity. His mother, described as noble and beautiful, finally agrees to travel with him and his sister Onalova to the Mohawk Valley when the moon is full, though she warns of dangers ahead and instructs him to secretly cache provisions. They plan to travel by night to avoid those "paid to keep us here." The narrative shifts to Sir William Johnson, British superintendent of the Six Nations, in his fortified castle overlooking the Mohawk Valley. A grim Mohawk chief, Aroghyadecka, arrives bearing news that Dyagetto and her children have fled the Miamis and are returning eastward. Johnson becomes angered when Aroghyadecka demands he prevent their arrival, revealing past sacrifices and secrets binding them together. After Johnson insults the chief by drinking alone, Aroghyadecka departs threatening vengeance. Johnson orders his soldier Malcom to locate and protect Dyagetto and her children.
