Queen Helen, The Amazon of the Overland; or, The Ghouls of the Gold Mines

This issue of the pulp magazine (Vol. X, July 11, 1883) features the serial "Queen Helen, the Amazon of the Overland; Or, The Ghouls of the Gold Mines" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham. The story is set in Golden Gulch, a rough mining town in the mountains, controlled by a ruthless band of robbers called the Ghouls, led by a merciless woman. The narrative centers on two couples: Horace Hammond (the Kid Glove Miner) and Ruby Roland, and Fred Fairbanks and his reformed-gambler wife. A parallel plot follows William Weldon, a professional gambler in the East, and his sister Helen, who discover that Edgar Elgin has eloped with and married Lois Hammond—William's former fiancée. The siblings swear vengeance and pursue the couple westward. The story then shifts to Edgar Elgin and his bride Lois in their cabin near Golden Gulch, where Edgar mines gold while Lois keeps house.
