Museum Catalog Note This issue of *Beadle and Adams* (February 10, 1886) features the opening of a serialized detective tale, "Nick Carter: The Demon Detective" by Albert W. Aiken. Chapter I, "A Mysterious Affair," begins with an intricate night-scene on the East River near Manhattan: a muffled boatman receives a mysterious canvas bag from two rough men at Turtle Bay near 46th Street, then conveys it to a boat-house in Ravenswood via signal lights, where a masked man in a black hood hoists the package through a trap-door. Simultaneously, Chapter II introduces "The Golden Idol" subplot centered on Gideon Gloster, a wealthy English gentleman residing at his estate Pinecroft in Fort Washington, who has recently become engaged to Ophelia Bullwinkle, daughter of a prominent New York judge. The narrative skillfully intercuts these two storylines—one clearly criminal, the other romantic and socially positioned—establishing multiple plot threads typical of period crime serialization.
