"The Rustlers of Butte City," by Maj. Daniel Boone Dumont, is a western serial set in snowed-in Montana during a harsh winter. Among the exiles are Dick Herries, a ruined former saloon owner turned petty criminal, and his daughter Kate. Sam Slevin, known as "Silver Sam of Central City," a former marshal and sheriff, observes the exodus. Kate confronts Slevin, accusing him of causing her father's expulsion. The narrative reveals Slevin's past: while marshal, he pursued outlaw Big Bill Pettis's gang alone, was captured, and humiliated when Pettis stripped away his distinctive silver ornaments and weapons, warning him against further interference.
