When a yacht capsizes on the Hudson near West Point, Cadet Captain Cecil Seldon dives into icy waters to rescue Louise Layton and her father, Major Layton. His lifelong friend and rival, Cadet Godfrey Granger, assists in the rescue, but afterward grows mysteriously distant toward Seldon. Seldon visits Villa Enders to inquire after the rescued party's health and encounters Louise, initiating a growing attachment.
