This 1895 *Beadle and Adams* pulp serial, "Cruiser Kosta's Hunt-Down" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, features twin half-brothers competing for leadership of the "Sea Gipsies"—an isolated maritime community inhabiting a fortified Florida island. After their king dies, his will mandates a series of trials to determine which son inherits rule. The brothers are tested in marksmanship, swordsmanship, sailing, and swimming. Kosta, the fair-haired son favored by his mother's appearance, loves Carriza, a beautiful young island woman who can only marry the future king. During the shooting test, Kosta spectacularly shoots an orange from her head while Lindo shoots static targets. In swordplay, Kosta disarms his brother. The text concludes with a swim to their mother's grave three leagues distant; Kosta pulls ahead while Lindo drowns during the struggle.
