When an impudent drifter called "Take-it-Easy Tom" intrudes on their scheme offering nothing but boastful talk and requests for grub stakes, Barney shrewdly loans him money while the Major investigates further. Meanwhile, Sybarita arrives by stage with her cousin and a gentleman companion, catching the eye of Colonel Jack Ransome, Hawke's rival, who suspects her traveling companions of mercenary motives.
