Dick Talbot at the Mines; or, Kentuck, the Sport By Albert W. Aiken, published October 20, 1897, this dime novel serial opens with a brutal revenge sequence in Devil's Canyon near Mount Shasta. An outcast captures and tortures a man by suspending him over a precipice with a noose, executing vengeance for past wrongs. The narrative shifts to the circular crater of Mount Shasta, where Hee-ma-Nang-a, chief of the Shasta tribe, and his sister Yuet-a (Moon) observe smoke rising from Cinnabar City, a newly established mining settlement. Six months prior, prospectors discovered cinnabar deposits; the mining company, under superintendent Richard Talbot, has erected mills with eight stamps and a population exceeding three hundred. The Indians witness the environmental transformation wrought by mining operations—tunnels, water-power erosion, and river diversion—as the white settlement encroaches upon traditional tribal lands, threatening the dwindling remnant of the once-powerful Shasta nation.
