As wagons overturn and animals panic, young Frank Maynard pursues a runaway spring wagon carrying women including Minnie Warren, racing blindly through snow and hailstones through a narrow upper pass. The wagon appears headed toward a hidden canyon's edge where tree-tops mask a fatal drop. Maynard's revolver misfires as the animals plunge toward death. Chapter II introduces a mysterious man with penetrating dark eyes leaning against a cottonwood, claiming leadership and caressing a revolver, suggesting schemes ahead. The narrative combines wilderness peril with romantic tension and hints of darker intrigue among the characters.
