Gold-Dust Pete
"Gold-Dust Pete; or, Lank Lute, the Old Colorado Hunter" This serial story by Edward W. Archer, published in Beadle and Adams's weekly, follows the meeting of Rodney Drew, a young miner recovering from fever, and Lank Lute, an aged Colorado hunter and trapper. After Drew narrowly survives a grizzly bear attack, Lute kills the beast and insists Drew recuperate at a nearby cabin. There they encounter Pete Century and his young son Charles, who are mining a remarkably rich gold deposit. Lute has brought Drew to their cabin despite Pete's explicit prohibition against visitors. To prevent Drew from exposing their operation, Pete and Charles agree to nurse him back to health and eventually offer him a stake in their claim—with the implicit understanding that he'll remain silent. Charles demonstrates unexpected kindness toward the injured youth, contrasting with his father's gruff threats and volatile temperament.
