The Phantom Trail; or, The Prairie Rangers Edward S. Ellis's 1871 serial follows Warren Marewold, an Ohio native seeking fortune and adventure in the American West, who encounters Preston Kendall at a campfire in Nebraska Territory in 1850. Kendall, a refined gentleman from New Orleans who has spent eight years since 1842 exploring the plains and mountains—from the Rocky Mountains to California and the Columbia River—reveals he pursues an unnamed, singular object that has driven his entire wandering life. Despite his comfortable circumstances, Kendall insists this will be his final journey westward; should he fail, he will return permanently to his parents. Marewold, initially attracted by Kendall's cultivation and companionship, agrees to accompany him toward Saskatchewan in British America. The narrative emphasizes detailed frontier scenery, careful characterization, and hints at an unresolved mystery motivating Kendall's decade-long quest.
