This science-fiction novel by Ralph Barby depicts a dystopian empire ruled by the Elite, where human populations are genetically engineered and controlled as servants. The narrative follows Ara, a young woman confined to a reproduction farm where females are artificially inseminated and forced to bear children destined for servitude. The regime employs bionic robots—hybrid creatures combining electronics and biology—as enforcers and controllers. Facing sterilization and endless pregnancies, Ara and three companions plan an escape. With assistance from Hilma, a dwarf worker (artificially stunted via electronic headgear), they traverse the barracks attic and reach an observation tower. Using a rope anchored to a tree beyond the farm's silicone-coated wall, Ara successfully crosses into the surrounding jungle, where other fugitives reportedly live.
