"La cabeza del Diablo" by Clark Carrados is a gothic horror narrative beginning when Dr. Walter Gratbans arrives by train at a remote European station and is driven through a stormy night to Castle Kopfteufel (Devil's Head). Upon arrival, a figure plummets from the tower—apparently a body striking the courtyard with blood. The incident proves to be a staged sequence: film director Romulus Erwald and his special-effects technician Volstin are shooting a horror movie at the castle. However, Gratbans suspects deception. He covertly samples the "fake blood" from Erwald's fingers and examines it under his microscope, becoming convinced actual human blood—from a real fatal fall—was used. Gratbans has arrived to treat the Countess Leonora, whose condition Erwald dismissively mentions. The narrative establishes an atmosphere of gothic menace surrounding the castle's ominous geology: an enormous, skull-like rock formation looms directly above the structure, threatening imminent collapse.
