The previous teacher, Miss Swift, died fifteen days earlier. Despite the grim circumstances, Vera decides to investigate further. The narrative establishes an atmosphere of isolation through descriptions of desolate landscape, a Victorian mansion, religious imagery (crucifixes, stained glass of the Archangel defeating Satan), and mysterious staff including the somber servant Eric. Mrs. Oates, the cook, explains the orphanage's financial collapse and impending dispersal of its children to harsh government institutions.
