Buffalo Bill and the Train-Jumpers
"Buffalo Bill and the Train-Jumpers," an adventure serial by an unnamed author, appears in this issue. The story opens as passengers on a western express discuss the notorious Deadshot Gang, outlaws who have conducted multiple train robberies over nearly a year. After debate among passengers including Senator Frohmenger, banker Silas Masters, and Dr. Jefferson about the gang's threat level, the train suddenly halts—a trestle bridge ahead has been burned to rubble, forcing passengers to undertake an overland journey. During the return journey, fallen logs block the track and the Deadshot Gang, led by Patsy Leman, executes a hold-up, robbing the passengers. Meanwhile, Buffalo Bill and Wells, Fargo Express agent Arty Bell arrive at Piwash station after one of their horses breaks a leg, where railroad linemen are observed making repairs. The narrative combines frontier action with robbery, deception, and the introduction of the famous scout as protagonist.
