THE DEMON OF THE FOREST This Dick Turpin Library issue presents "The Demon of the Forest," a wilderness adventure serial set in British-controlled territories northwest of Minnesota during autumn. Two wealthy Ottawa merchants' sons—the fair, sturdy eighteen-year-old Hal Dayton and the skeletal, six-foot-plus Dave Laam (nicknamed "Big Track")—navigate a forest stream by skiff seeking the settlement of Quinnebog. They encounter Hazel Eye, a white woman dressed as an Indian princess and mounted on a white stallion, who warns them of dangers: the Sioux chief Sitting Bull hunts them, as does a trapper named Canada Chet near Beaver Lake. When Sitting Bull's warriors attack, Hazel Eye intervenes, invoking fear of "the Demon of the Forest" to compel their retreat. The boys escape downriver to Beaver Lake, where a sawmill settlement appears among dense pine forests, with hundreds of beaver huts visible in the water.
