Fred Fearnot and the Council of Ten
This issue of *Work and Win* (No. 409, October 5, 1906) contains the opening chapter of "Fred Fearnot and the Council of Ten: Or, The Plot Against His Life" by Hal Standish. Fred Fearnot, Terry Olcott, and Terry's sister Evelyn are in Chicago after a timber-dealing trip to Michigan. Invited to stay by Colonel Algood's family at his lakeside estate, they cruise Lake Michigan and spend a week in social activities. Fred receives a cryptic death threat signed "One of the Council of Ten," which he discusses with Terry before departing Chicago. Traveling to Rock Island, Illinois, to investigate a stock farm purchase opportunity near Rock Island on the Mississippi River, Fred and companions meet Chapman Price, a real estate broker handling the sale of a farm belonging to the absent Schultz. Price entertains them with historical anecdotes about Black Hawk and the Sac and Fox Indians, and discusses the Mississippi River's dangerous currents.
