Work and Win No. 744: Fred Fearnot's Engine Co.

This is issue No. 744 of a Frank Tousey pulp weekly (March 7, 1913). The featured story is "Brave Work as a Fireman" by Hal Standish. Chapter I introduces Fred Fearnot, son of Judge Fearnot, a New York lawyer, who is sent to the booming industrial town of Eatonton to manage his father's fifty-acre property. The land, acquired years ago as payment for a debt, has suddenly become valuable due to the town's rapid expansion from water-powered mills. Fred arrives at the Eatonton Hotel and observes speculators discussing the desirability of the property. He hires hackman Joe Miller to gather market information about recent property sales. That evening, Fred encounters real estate speculator Gresham at the hotel and reveals his ownership of the tract. Gresham offers $500 per acre, but Fred, having learned land commands higher prices, presses for Gresham's actual limit, noting the river frontage suits mill sites.
