Finding Miss Richford away, the young men lunch at Rector's restaurant, where they meet showman Joe Anderson and assist a well-dressed woman, Mrs. Humphrey Lorraine, who has been robbed of her purse. Fred pays her bill and later receives reimbursement and gratitude from the society woman. The narrative then shifts to reconnecting with Bill Clark, an ex-clown operating a museum side-show, who warmly welcomes the protagonists. The story emphasizes Fred's gentlemanly character and social prominence throughout.
