His Play-Day

This issue of *The Cavalier* contains two stories. The first, untitled and fragmentary in OCR, concerns a mining operation where two men nearly come to blows over a woman and a valuable ore specimen; one man warns the other that killing him would ruin their partnership just as a promising mining vein appears. The second story, "His Play-Day" by Eleanor M. Ingram, follows Roger Harding, a rigidly controlled factory owner who discharged a driver for missing work. That evening, Harding slips on wet subway stairs and collides with Dulcie Fenton, a young woman whose dress tears. He becomes infatuated with her, learns they share childhood history (he once gave her candy on Christmas), and spends hours with her waiting for a train back to Englewood. He calls her his fiancée to a soda fountain attendant, though she reveals she's leaving town permanently the next day.
