"Helgvor of the Blue River" By J. H. Rosny Aîné and Georges Surdez This prehistoric fiction serial concerns two protagonists separated by tragedy. Among the Tzoh people dwelling in mountain caves, a volcanic eruption destroys most of the tribe. Before the disaster, young Glava—atypical among her kind for her light coloring and inherited strength—defies the tribal custom of human sacrifice to save her sister Amhao and her child. The trio escapes by canoe down the river. Simultaneously, Helgvor of the Blue River people represents an alternative human society: peaceful herders and hunters with superior dog-breeding knowledge and metallurgical ignorance. Walking the riverbank with trained dogs and a wolf cub, Helgvor spots distant smoke—a sign of approaching strangers. The narrative contrasts these societies through their tools, customs, and philosophies, setting conditions for their collision as surviving Tzoh warriors seek new conquests.
