Indigo Island "Indigo Island," by Clive Trent, is an espionage adventure spanning wartime Asia. Shane, an American chemist, is mistakenly identified as the deceased Burton by Han Mow, head of a peace faction. Han Mow conscripts Shane into a plot to redirect Mr. Li's prized indigo crop—vegetable indigo cultivated only on Li's Pacific island—from Chinese Nationalist supply funding to Japanese control. Shane is sent to the island posing as Burton, where he meets Camille Davenant, Mr. Li's Number One wife and a capable pilot, sparking immediate romantic interest. Upon arrival at Li's compound, Shane encounters the elderly Mr. Li, Harvard Professor Hewlett, overseer Barron, and secretary Fang. The narrative establishes a triangular conflict: Shane must maintain his deception while developing feelings for Camille, who believes he loyally serves China's war effort.
