The Shadow of the Rope

Initially charming and generous, he becomes a gambling-addicted drunk in London, subjecting her to quarrels and financial control. Their marriage deteriorates across a rented London townhouse until Rachel, enduring an intolerable insult from her husband, resolves to leave immediately for Australia. She packs through the night while he sleeps drunk in the study, then abandons the house at dawn—only to mysteriously redirect her cab elsewhere instead of collecting her trunk, approaching a woman whose face registers shocked recognition and anger.
