Short Stories, June 25, 1925
Catalog Note This issue of *Short Stories* (June 25, 1925) features a serialized Western novel, "Haskell of the Dug-Out Hills" by Frank C. Robertson, its opening installment detailed here. The narrative concerns Bob Haskell, a cowpuncher whose reputation as a "killer" stems from a three-year-old saloon shooting in which he defended a sheepherder against drunk bullies. Now employed by cattle interests in the Dug-Out Hills to intimidate sheepherders, Haskell struggles against his undeserved reputation while befriending an eccentric old wolf-trapper named Clover. The plot thickens as a new sheep outfit led by a man named Obray arrives—armed with a notorious killer called "Croppy"—and as Nola Patterson, wife of Haskell's employer, makes a clandestine visit to his camp. The issue also advertises stories by W.C. Tuttle, Magruder Maury, and F.R. Pierce, and previews the July 10 issue featuring "The Fighting Danites" by Dane Coolidge and works by John I. Cochrane and H. Bedford-Jones.
