The Warden of the Marches This serial installment by Sydney C. Grier presents a dramatic action sequence set in colonial India. After a Christmas picnic excursion to mountain ruins near Alibad, Mabel North rides the military officer Dick's charger Roy alongside Mr. Brendon of the Public Works Department. In a narrow ravine at sunset, armed robbers ambush the party, shooting Brendon and kidnapping Mabel. Fitz Anstruther, pursuing on his horse Sheikh, gains ground on the fleeing abductors, whose lighter native steeds are slowed by Roy's weight. Using a commanding "Halt" that stops the military horse, Fitz forces the bridle-holder to release Mabel and shoots him dead in the ensuing struggle. As three remaining robbers prepare counterattack, other party members emerge from the gorge, prompting the kidnappers to flee into darkness, leaving Mabel rescued but traumatized.
