Munsey's Magazine, December 1893, Vol. X, No. 3, includes two main articles. "The Great Living Composers" by George Holme surveys contemporary musical leaders following Gounod's death: Verdi (eighty, still composing), Pietro Mascagni (whose single opera "Cavalleria Rusticana" brought sudden fame), Johannes Brahms, Antonin Dvorak (recently appointed director of America's National Conservatory), Edvard Grieg, Max Bruch, Anton Rubinstein, Sir Arthur Sullivan (celebrated for comic operas with Gilbert), Camille Saint-Saëns, and Peter Ilyitch Tschaikowsky. The article includes biographical details and photographs. Also featured: "The Pearl of Savoy" by Fannie C.W. Barbour on Queen Marguerite of Italy, first queen of the unified Italian kingdom, describing her character, family lineage from the House of Savoy, and intellectual cultivation. A short poem "To Priscilla, with a Christmas Card" by Nathan M. Levy appears between the two pieces.
