"Wingate's Raiders," by Charles S.J. Rolo, depicts Major Michael "Mad Mike" Calvert's demolition unit operating behind Japanese lines in Burma during World War II. The raiders are tasked with destroying a key section of the Jap-held Burma railroad and three steel bridges while contending with enemy patrols and difficult jungle terrain. After initial setbacks with supply drops and the crossing of the Irrawaddy River, Wingate's plan calls for the columns to split up, evade the Japanese, and escape Burma by whatever route seems safest, with wounded men depending on air rescue for survival.
