Astounding Stories #1 This anthology issue contains at least two stories: the first features a scientist with a mysterious bottle claiming to hold the secret "to live again," involving encounters with what appears to be a creature from Mars. The second story follows a boy named Tab and a girl named Rosie who befriend an elephant; over the course of weeks, the elephant becomes increasingly intelligent and eventually develops into a humanoid creature with large eyes that can speak, expressing a desire to be useful to someone. A third story depicts a woman struggling unsuccessfully to grow a garden, only to discover a grotesque plant-like creature with an enormous eye emerging from the ground, which she recoils from in horror.
