After discovering a dead rooster on the road, Boyd and the local authorities suspect foul play and set out to stop the illegal operation. When a man in a red suit attempts to escape with the evidence, Boyd pursues him but the criminal manages to flee. The story concludes with revelations about a mine shaft murder scheme: Boyd uncovers that Clegg Baker and Catamount Paley had killed Jim Partlow's brother Jed by rigging a cave-in, but Jed's accusatory message on the mine wall proves their guilt, leading to their confession and arrest.
