Dan'l Boone's wealthy stepfather Ernest forces a contest between Dan'l and his biological son William to determine who is the better man—the winner will inherit the family fortune. The two brothers embark on a frontier journey where they encounter various dangers including beavers that have dammed streams and Paleface, an Indian spy working with a renegade named Jolly Jim Dandy who plans to smuggle large guns downriver to attack the settlements.
