Don Winslow accepts an invitation to a dance from Mercedes Colby, but the outing becomes complicated when he must meet with a contact about money at the Waverly Hotel the next morning. After encountering suspicious circumstances at the hotel, Don learns that Captain Russel has been mentioned in a will, leading to a mystery involving inheritance and death.
