Dudley, a teenage boy, attempts to impress a girl named Mona by posing as a tough character willing to participate in dangerous activities like shooting and fighting, but his deceptions unravel when an older man recognizes him as the wrong type and casts him in a crime-fighting television show instead. After Dudley lies about his involvement and claims credit for the role, his father punishes him by refusing his allowance, leaving him unable to buy a new dress for the prom. When Dudley fails to show up at Mona's house with sandwiches, she confides her heartbreak to another woman and kicks him out of her life, after which Dudley finds himself literally trapped in the desert with coyotes closing in.
