Famous Crimes #12
"Bill Payne—Tarheel Killer" recounts the true crime story of Bill Payne, a renegade murderer from North Carolina who escaped from Caledonian Prison after fifteen years and planned a bank robbery with accomplice Kinnie Wagner. After robbing the Sanford Bank, Payne and Wagner are pursued by police and sheriffs; Wagner is killed during the escape, and Payne is tracked through the woods by law enforcement. Both Payne and Wagner were captured on the same day in January 1933 and executed in the North Carolina gas chamber on July 1, 1933.
