A cruel schoolteacher named Hazel manipulates her way into marrying wealthy farmer Ezra Potter by exploiting his lonely widower status and his need for a mother figure for his son Danny. After the marriage, Hazel systematically abuses Danny through starvation and isolation, eventually attempting to kill him by using a vicious bull she has deliberately agitated. When Danny escapes and flees across the fields, Hazel pursues him in a fury, but the boy eludes her grasp in the darkness, leaving her fate ambiguous as she continues her desperate chase.
