"The General Lied" follows a soldier named Benny whose culinary aspirations conflict with his military duties. After being drafted and sent to cooking school, Benny discovers that a general has falsified his combat record to make him appear more heroic, claiming he single-handedly destroyed a Nazi tank and attacked a Nazi stronghold in the French village of Ste. Annette. When the general pressures him to accept an inflated Silver Star citation rather than reveal the truth, Benny initially hesitates but ultimately refuses to perpetuate the lie. The story concludes with Benny's unit engaging in actual combat operations in difficult terrain, where he proves his genuine worth as a soldier through legitimate action rather than false heroics.
