The issue contains at least two stories. The first story depicts an incident where a non-commissioned officer's error results in sixteen inexperienced soldiers being shipped out with a unit destined for Korea, leading to casualties until a sergeant takes command and implements proper training and tactical measures to reduce losses. "A Good C.O." tells of an infantry captain who has suffered heavy losses and lost ground; recognizing his lieutenant's inexperience, he takes direct field command, improves morale, digs deeper foxholes, secures extra ammunition and weapons, and coordinates artillery support to hold the ridge north of the unit's position against an enemy advance, earning a promotion to captain.
