"The G.I.'s General" depicts U.S. Army soldiers engaged in combat operations in Vietnam, where they suffer casualties from enemy fire and helicopter attacks while their platoons rotate through dangerous assignments guarding villages and searching for enemy positions. When infantry and tank forces coordinate to attack a heavily fortified enemy hill held for thirty days, the soldiers achieve a breakthrough, with the tank's cannon forcing the enemy back and allowing infantry to advance. A lieutenant survives an enemy bomb explosion that kills the general who ordered him to take the hill, but he reconciles with a tank sergeant and they agree to cooperate for the duration of their mission.
